Here’s an example of how that “lapping everyone on the couch" mentality is present in the real world.
This ad is taken from an issue of Women’s Health. The tagline reads: “For Running, Not Running Erands. We make real performance products for real women who get after every day.”
This is a huge problem for two reasons. First, is that person in the corner not a real woman? So what if she’s wearing performance gear while running errands? Every adult needs to run errands during their daily life, it’s an important part of living responsibly. To imply that she’s somehow less worthy of this clothing just because she wears athletic gear while shopping - That’s really weird and it ignores what she does during the other 23 hours of her day. Would the company really deny her the right to buy their products just because she doesn’t spend all of her time exercising? (Hell no, you know that they’d take her money no matter what!)
And second: This company is attempting to sell their products through Girl Hate. They’re putting these two women into competition with each other and saying that the runner is “real” & going “after it” while the other woman is not. If you’re the “real” woman, then hooray! You deserve to buy nice things! You’re better than all those other fakes out there! God, don’t you just hate how those other girls dare to wear the same kind of mass-produced clothing as you? The nerve!
Commercial companies shouldn’t have to put down and demean women in order to sell their products. This clothing is going to be sold to everyone no matter what their exercise regime is like, so why insult people? It’s hypocritical, especially since you know that they’ll happily sell their clothing to anyone who’s willing to buy. All this ad does is create an imaginary hierarchy between “real” and “fake” women where we’re trained to judge each other on sight. We don’t need that in our lives.
